Lets not be a shut-in during the shut-in. There is lots of fun stuff to do in the winter.
Winter is really beautiful. Exploring it can be fun even if it is just a drive. I like to take my camera along for the ride as there might be something interesting along the way. This day I was running an errand that was a 1 1/2 hour drive when I drove through heaven. A hoarfrost had painted everything in a delicate covering of frost backlit by the sun. Breathtaking.
When was the last time you lace ’em up for a real pond skate. It had been years for me. But one of the pleasant surprises of the pandemic is that we have to take our activities outdoor. Some of the conservation areas have cleared ponds for skating and even made skate trails. Let your inner child come out and have some fun.
Pond skating, the real deal brought back memories of when I was a child. My grandmother would take me out on River Canard in Essex county and we would skate for miles. She would usually end up towing me back on the end of a hockey stick as I would tire out before her. And lots of memories of pond hockey, coming in for dinner at dark, closes frozen stiff with snow and ice, big smile on a rosy cheeked face and hungry as a bear. Some of the arena’s have gotten creative with their equipment as well. They might be closed for indoor skating but I know a few that have taken the Zamboni outside and made a skate trail on the baseball diamond. One has become really fancy with Christmas lighting strings running around the entire perimeter for night skating. Check it out in your area.
Oh, and don’t forget to bring a snack.
