On the slopes of the Andean mountain range 52 km from Quito lies the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve.  This conservation area, protected from continued deforestation, is a high biodiversity subtropical region offering up a smorgasbord of little-studied wildlife and plant species, some of which are wonders I didn’t even know existed.

This is a prime birders destination.  Bird watchers and photographers will find this area to be a target rich zone.  And even non birders will enjoy being dazzled by the variety and colouration of the species.

The Hummingbird species alone will keep you entertained all day with over 300 species in the area..  Species include violet ear’s, coronet’s, racket-tail’s, sylph’s and my favourite, the Andean Emerald. Tanager’s abound along with finch’s and jay’s.  Keep an eye out for the mountain-toucan and barbet.

Many magnificent orchid species are also found in the Bellavista region. With thousands of different species in the area there will always be something blooming with some very unusual shapes and forms.

There is plenty to do.  There are numerous nature reserves in the area, each with their own selection of hiking trails.  You can take a canopy adventure walk and zip line through the jungle.  Mountain biking is another optional activity to enjoy in the area. Look up Mindo Biking and see how they can help you out.

A fabulous hike in the area is the Tanques Rio Pichan area.  There are several to choose from, some up to 40 km long.  You will see beautiful vistas of the mountains, lush vegetation and wonderful waterfalls.

Where to stay:

If you can get into the lodge at the Bellavista Cloud Forest you will not be disappointed.  This Eco-lodge offers guesthouse accommodation, transportation to and from Quito, all meals inclusive and guided hikes starting at $US354.

Andean Emerald Hummingbird. My favourite of all with its iridescent blend of colours.

Alternatively, if you can’t get in you can stay at the Pululahua Geobotanic Reserve hostal, Mashpi jungle lodge, Casa Divina Lodge where we stayed.
